Three domestic boxers have fought with Gennadiy Golovkin, four bones are broken.
Two of seriously and Matthew Macklins ribs, Martin Murrays nose and famously, the eye socket of Kell Brook have been damaged by a man whose raw energy is portrayed by a horror film like something unthinkable.
Golovkins sufferers speak about the force of his cries. Theres nothing particularly clever, unlike the opponents of Vasiliy Lomachenko who explain genius and his grace. The contrast with Golovkin is crude – that he has left a path of devastation to prove it also only cries harder than everyone else.
Sergiy Derevyanchenko could be the crumpled body – he strikes Golovkin on Saturday night at 2am, live on Sky Sports Action, in an IBF middleweight championship battle from Madison Square Garden, New York. Derevyanchenko is a challenging customer but that which Golovkin brings to the ring is exceptional.
Your body shots he hit me with? Something popped from my belly and it required my physio weeks to push it back , recalled Murray who had lasted 11 rounds in 2015.
My nose? Theres nothing I can do about it. I broke my nose but it did not bend on the outside. My nose was bent by him .
Im still feeling it today. My nose hasnt been the same in the three-and-a-half years because I fought him so, when I retire, Ill need a surgery – he needs to cover it
Murrays is not the life that has been changed because trading punches with Golovkin. Brooks orbital bone was smashed in a five-round defeat in 2016 and, in his next fightthat he broke the other eyes socket from Errol Spence Jr..
Its a frequent injury you have in automobile crashes, since your face strikes the dash and debris the bone at the front of the own face, Brooks trainer Dominic Ingle told Sky Sports in the moment.
If he got to the hospital that I believe the doctor stated that some more punches on that and it could have beennot fatal, but it may have cost you your eye-sight.
Macklins recovery from broken ribs after a defeat in 2013 was agonising. What hurt most?
Getting up in the morning, and heading back to bedcoughing and coughing!
The Golovkin of kazakhstan held the world middleweight championships for eight years after, he was about a 23-fight knockout run until Danny Jacobs took him the space. The blemishes on his album that is 41-fight will be the draw and conquer to his rival SaulCanelo Alvarez.
In the past 18 months, Vanes Martirosyan and Steve Rolls were blasted off. 35 of the 41 battles of Golovkin have been stoppage successes.
He had a Mike Tyson-like reputation, says Murray. We had the mindset that we had to get through the worst day of their daily life to possess the best day.
Golovkin needed, according to the Brits with all the broken bones, a lot more than energy. What became hopeless to withstand was he manoeuvred himself to unleash that power in so many ways.
I thought everybody he fought was crushed until they got in the ring, Murray continued. As soon as they felt his power they were emotionally defeated.
I felt his energy in the first round. I thought,I will cope with this, however, Id prepared myself.
But its the culmination of the range, distance, the way he dismisses the ring, gives you no breathing room and his punch selection. Everything got to me personally.
He works the equation out when he is in the ring. He does that if he can bang out somebody. I gave the problem of a high, tight shield but he solved it.
Murray now jokes it had been abit stupid to move on into the 11th round.
Macklin was aware of stories a relatively-unknown Golovkin had abandoned wreckage in Freddie Roachs gym, but nevertheless took him on.
He did not catch me with anything to the head, Macklin said. But I felt the burden of the jab and a couple stiff straight hands – that I knew I did not want to go hit with a huge hook.
I had been preoccupied thats the reason that he got me to the entire body.
He carried electricity, man. I have never been hit like this to the body. I felt so throughout pain or paralysed for 30 minutes. It was excruciating.
Over the decades I had taken good body shots were winded, but never gone . This time I could not suck it up. It had been different… just, different.
Brook had the towel to be thrown after five rounds following his eye socket broke. The angle of the blows was what harm him.
He was bizarre, how he pulled his shots, Brook said at the time. They landed if you did not expect him to throw them. However, hes so robust and powerful, you know that you are being struck.
I have been in with anyone with that much electricity. It was power that is weird hard to explain but it is certainly powerful. Some boxers have a sharp energy, others possess that dense strength and his was in the center. All I will say is that when you are hit by him on the arm, you know that youve been struck.
Its simple looking on it and seeing him throw those bizarre shots, but till youre in there and it is actually happening to you, you cant really prepare for this.
Will preparation help Derevyanchenko? Stays although golovkin is 37.
