John Bercow declared his intention and the race has started to replace him at the influential position. His decision is significant as it prevents post general election, a new parliament and for that reason, Johnson’s minority Government will be unable to install the candidate of their own choice.
Hence, two Labour MPs are front runners for the project, together with Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Labour MP for Chorley, the current odds on favourite at round the 5/6 indicate, the bookies give him a 55% chance of becoming the next Speaker, and Harriet Harman, Labour MP for Camberwell & Peckham, next favourite. Harriet Harman was as long as 5/1 with some bookmakers from the aftermath of the statement of Bercow but has shortened.
Traditionally the speaker has alternated between the two parties, but that tradition has been upended by the Labour government in 2000 and precedent counts for little in those turbulent events in Parliament. It will appear likely that a civil candidate will follows the Conservative Bercow, not least because the Tory government is working in a large minority.
The situation for Hoyle is evident, he is the Deputy Speaker who is well respected in the part. He was at the Speaker’s Chair in 2017 during the attack in Westminster and his expertise is a huge tick in his own favour. What’s more, Hoyle has been open about the fact once Bercow stands aside, that he needs the use of Speaker, therefore he’ll be a name in the hat.
Whilst not as open about her desire to sit in the Speaker’s Chair, Harman has succeeded about it before. She has a wealth of Parliamentary experience, having served as MP. She has taken temporary roles as Acting Leader of the Labour Party and Leader of the Opposition. She will be satisfactory to both remainers and brexiters that was softer and has maintained her powder quite dry during the Brexit turmoil. Though she is as short as currently the greatest odds of Harman are 11/4.
The shortest priced Tory candidate will be Dame Eleanor Laing, together with companies offering as long as 10/1 (an estimated 9% likelihood ) and short as 5/1 on her becoming the next Speaker. She has not held the high office but she is now another Deputy to the Speaker, but senior than Hoyle. She has a black mark over her after she had been embroiled in the expenditures scandal of the MP. Other longshots include Chris Bryant (10/1), who is openly declared attention, Jacob Rees-Mogg (25/1), Hilary Benn (33/1) along with Angela Eagle (50/1). At this time until the race is settled it seems hard to see past the front runners, but do not hesitate to observe that the bolter come out of nowhere.
Tip: 11/4 for Harriet Harman to become the next Speaker of the House of Commons looks the best value.
