If you’re a resident of the excellent state of New Jersey, or simply passing through, congratulate yourself: You’re currently in the nation that provides the most widely available palette of sports betting options.
Sure Nevada and Mississippi and may have more land-based novels, but just in New Jersey can bettors roll the dice on a 3-leg parlay without once having to visit the casino. And as your setting that bet, make sure you thank the U.S. Supreme Court, which in May 2018 lifted the national ban on sports gambling, otherwise called PASPA.
We also should extend thanks to New Jersey lawmakers for quickly passing legislation which set the tax rate on online sports wagering reduced, and for not placing unnecessary restrictions on operators that would hinder the growth of the industry. Finally, NJ sports betting would haven’t went live so quickly if it weren’t for the nation’s regulatory body, the NJ Division of Gaming Enforcement, that has provided supervision to the state’s online casino and poker industries because 2013, enabling regulators to make the transition into online sports betting that much simpler.
Whether new to sports wagering or a seasoned sharp, we have you covered with a in depth look at the legal NJ online sports gambling market, covering online and cellular sportsbooks that lawfully take stakes, what you’ll need to do to get started, and a look back to how legal sports betting in the Garden State became a reality. Getting started at NJ online sportsbooks
Based on whether you are already involved in the NJ online casino or poker scene, it will take anywhere from zero seconds to no more than 5 minutes to place your initial bet. That is, pending you fulfill a couple of eligibility conditions:
Under 21? Hold all stakes It doesn’t matter how mature you might be, if you are under the age of 21, then you can’t enroll an internet sports betting account in New Jersey. This is the same age condition used by Atlantic City casinos and the state’s internet gambling and poker sites. 18-year-olds will have to adhere to betting on the ponies and the lottery.
Both toes in New Jersey
Players don’t need to necessarily be in New Jersey to register and finance their sportsbook accounts, but so as to play real-money, they need to get both feet planted in the Garden State. Notice , that doesn’t mean that they have to hold residence in New Jersey, rather they merely have to be physically located within its boundaries.
Therefore a bettor from a neighboring country like Pennsylvania or New York may view the New Jersey lines (on most sites), enroll and fund an account then head to that Starbucks right over the border to put real-money wagers, in so long as they have an established Wi-Fi or 4G connection.
Registering an account
For those involved in daily fantasy or NJ online casino/poker, enrollment on many online sportsbooks is a breeze. That is because many operators have woven their sport betting sites into their existing platforms. Have a Play SugarHouse casino accounts? No need to register to your sportsbook. Same goes for DraftKings DFS account holders, and people enrolled with Betfair Casino, that uses the same registration information since FanDuel Sportsbook. Easy.
Registration SSN
Only the last four digits of your SSN needed!
For the remainder, registration is a simple two-step procedure, first requiring that players enter some details about their person, such as their social security number (but usually only the last four digits). Then their advice is vetted using a rigorous verification process, used to make sure that player identities are protected from any shady deeds. This process takes just a couple of seconds, after which players are free to make their first deposit.
Funding an account
While many online sportsbooks at New Jersey provide no-deposit bonuses for new players, those who wish to make more than just a few wagers will likely need to make a deposit. Here’s the good news: Depositing funds on a NJ online sportsbook is easy, largely because most operators have been successfully managing payment processing for ages. The kinks, by and large, have been exercised.
Bettors will find that just about every sportsbook accepts many different payment methods such as ACH, credit/debit cards, prepaid card alternatives, and PayPal, together with trades processing near instantaneously. There are also a multitude of approaches to get money off the site, with rapid turnaround times. So no need to worry if that +1000 bet comes in and you want to lock up the win.
Word to the wise: When first financing an NJ online sports betting account, be sure to use one of the links on the page or on our review pages to make sure that you receive the maximum welcome bonus for new players.

Tech partners: IGT (platform), Paddy Power Betfair (pricing/risk management)
Mobile apps: iOS and Android
Integration ties: Betfair Casino (wallet), FanDuel Daily Fantasy (desktop system )
Particular characteristics: In-play, cash out, active promotional schedule To say that FanDuel online sportsbook has a lot going for it would be a fairly gross understatement. Forgetting about its gigantic daily dream database for a moment, FanDuel recently merged with industry sharp Paddy Power Betfair (forming the FanDuel Group), meaning it’s one of the most skillful sportsbook vets in its own corner. Together, and with a little help from IGT, they have created a book that is largely loved from the NJ sports betting community, not to mention that the staff at US Bets too.

Interesting fact: FanDuel Sportsbook frequently rolls out promotions at which gamers have a (good) chance to win a more than 100% incentive.
DraftKings Sportsbook
Launch date: August 6, 2018
Welcome bonus: Matched free wager up to $500
Tech partners: Kambi
Mobile apps: iOS and Android
Integration ties: DraftKings Daily Fantasy (stage, tight pocket )
Particular characteristics: In-play, cash out
Surprisingly, it had been daily fantasy operator DraftKings and not an Atlantic City brand that launched the first online sports betting site in New Jersey. That first-mover status, together with DK’s crazy big user database, connection with innovative tech provider Kambi, and competitive advertising has paid off big, as DraftKings is without question the industry’s early market share leader. Whether it is going to remain on top remains a big question, as competition is becoming fierce, and the”juice” on DraftKings tendencies somewhat higher relative to other websites.
DraftKings Sportsbook on desktop and Android Interesting fact: Bettors on DraftKings can utilize their daily dream contest winnings to bet on sports. BetStars NJ
Launch date: September 13, 2018
Welcome bonus: Up to $500 in free bets
Tech partners: The Stars Group (parent company)
Mobile programs: iOS and Android
Integration ties: PokerStars NJ (wallet, cellular platform)
Special characteristics: In-play, money out, Spin & Bet
BetStars is no stranger to the online sports betting space, having launched an international merchandise in 2015 that has increased quicker than Lebron James’ net worth. It is also the sister manufacturer of a little online poker website which you might have heard of: PokerStars. Admittedly, BetStars NJ — licensed under Resorts Digital — hasn’t made much noise yet, thanks in part to its late launch on iOS and the lack of a PC platform. But it’s making up for lost time by depositing more promotions at players than you can shake a stick at. That, together with its slick user interface, cutesy game formats like Spin & Bet, and powerful branding guide us to think it is going attract a fair number of punters.
BetStars NJ for Android
Interesting fact: BetStars NJ enjoys to offer increased chances on 3-leg NFL parlays. Be on the lookout for those Super Boosts.
Perform SugarHouse Sports
Launch date: August 23, 2018
Welcome bonus: 100% match up to $250 (1x playthrough)
Tech partners: Kambi
Mobile apps: iOS and Android
Integration ties: Perform SugarHouse Casino (wallet, stage )
Special features: In-play, cash out, full cellular integration
When Play SugarHouse, operated by Rush Street Interactive, burst upon the NJ online casino scene in September 2016, it had been pretty much an afterthought. But players quickly noticed that the website did nearly every facet of iGaming greater than anybody else. Suffice it to say, the website blew up, and we anticipate its fully incorporated sportsbook to perform quite nicely too. Beyond its leading reputation, Play SugarHouse provides tons of stakes (both pre-game and live), an aggressive and easy-to-clear welcome bonus, free bingo games, along with a loyalty program that actually matters. And now that it’s aligned with Monmouth Park it could provide wagers on NBA games — it could not do while partnered with Golden Nugget AC.

Fun fact: The range of available in-play bets for any given contest is typically in the dozens, or even hundreds.
888sport NJ
Launch date: September 10, 2018
Welcome bonus: $10 free + 100% up to $500 (6x playthrough)
Tech partners: Kambi
Mobile programs: iOS and Android
Integration ties: 888casino, 888poker (wallet, loose ties to platform)
Special characteristics: In-play, cash out
Much like BetStars NJ, 888sport has been launched in different authorities long before it set sail to the U.S. to not mention, parent firm 888 Holdings, partnered with Caesars in Atlantic City, was an active participant at the NJ iGaming marketplace since 2013, encouraging both online casino (888casino) and poker (888poker) websites. All this bodes favorably for 888sport NJ’s potential, as does its partnership with Kambi, tons of gambling markets, and slick interface. But the playthrough requirements on bonuses are tough, and some of the lines have something to be desired, therefore we do wonder how just how large a niche it will carve out.
888sport NJ desktop and Cellular perspectives Fun fact: 888sport is one of the very few NJ online sports gambling sites where gamers can land a bonus without needing to commit a dime.
Caesars Sportsbook
Launch date: September 6, 2018
Welcome bonus: $10 free + 100% up to $300 (casino just, 10x playthrough on slots)
Tech partners: Scientific Games
Mobile apps: iOS and Android
Integration ties: Caesars Casino (wallet and stage )
Special features: full cellular integration, earn Total Rewards credits on line For a company that has plenty of experience in the mobile sports betting sphere, Caesars convinced disappointed with the first launch of its internet sportsbook in New Jersey. The lines are positive, no doubt, but there’s just not enough of them, including no in-play alternative. That said, the groundwork of a solid app was laid, as the sportsbook has been integrated into Caesars’ popular online casino program, with sports wagers awarding Total Rewards level and benefits credits. The cashier can also be top-notch, featuring PayPal, ACH payments and a slew of other options. There is just no sports specific welcome package and hardly any to bet on, and that needs to change.
Caesars NJ Sportsbook — desktop and mobile program Fun Fact: Sports bettors can redeem their got online Full Rewards rewards credits for on-site cash or for use at any of the nearly 40 Total Rewards casinos.
playMGM Sportsbook
Launch date: August 22, 2018
Welcome bonus: None
Tech partners: IGT (technology ), GVC (joint venture)
Mobile programs: iOS and Android
Integration ties: playMGM Casino (wallet)
Particular features: In-play
What do you get when you combine one of the largest casino brands on the planet (who happens to support a renowned mobile sports betting app in Nevada), a major gambling operator in GVC, and tech given by IGT? Turns out, you get a fairly substandard app. Yes, playMGM Sportsbook is serviceable, offering a reasonable variety of gambling markets, solid lines, along with a shared wallet with playMGM Casino. However, the lack of a unique welcome bonus, in-play, and really any sense of innovation holds it back. We anticipate improvements in the near future, which will hopefully include a desktop program, but for now, there just is not anything special here.
playMGM Sports on Android
Interesting Fact: playMGM sportsbook users can earn freeplay benefits at playMGM Casino.

Particular features: In-play
In only a short time period, William Hill has established itself as a dominant force at the New Jersey sports gambling market. Already it functions branded books at Monmouth Park, Ocean Resort Casino, and Tropicana Casino. Complementing its land-based novels is a sports wagering app available for iOS, Android, and background computer. The program is, well… typical, encouraging a good variety of gambling markets, in-play, and supplying an adequate cashier. There’s just nothing dazzling about it, at least not yet.
William Hill NJ on desktop and mobile
Fun fact: William Hill is the sole operator in New Jersey aligned with more than one land-based partner.
Land-based sportsbooks in New Jersey
In the event the numerous online sports gambling websites available in New Jersey aren’t sufficient to whet your wagering appetite, or if gambling over the Internet simply is not your thing, you will be very happy to know that New Jersey plays host to a range of land-based novels. And decent news for you personally Central and Northern New Jerseyans, these brick & mortar books aren’t restricted exclusively to Atlantic City, as conventional casino gaming is.
Casino sportsbooks
Currently, seven out of Atlantic City’s nine present casinos comprise sportsbooks. Some are larger (and more durable ) than others, but we guess that as the business ages, so also will the AC sportsbooks mature.

The state’s horsemen are also heavily involved in the sports gambling industry, together with Monmouth Park and its enthusiastic operator Dennis Drazin cutting the ribbon on New Jersey’s first land-based sportsbook, the Monmouth Park Sports Book from William Hill, on June 14, 2018.
This was followed exactly one month after by the debut of the FanDuel Sportsbook at the Meadowlands. Since, the Meadowlands has become the top earning land-based publication in New Jersey, which does not really shock given its strong branding, proximity to New Jersey’s and New York’s main population centres, and needless to say, its view of MetLife Stadium — home of the New York Giants and Jets.
The state’s third horseracing track, Freehold Raceway, has yet to dip its toe in the sport gambling waters, but its chances are looking good.
More NJ sportsbooks coming soon If you think New Jersey has a great deal of sportsbook today, simply wait.
On the front, we don’t expect too much growth. With the Introduction of the William Hill Sports Book in Tropicana Casino, there is only two candidates left in Atlantic City to launch novels. One, Hard Rock Casino, we expect to go live with a retail publication this quarter, as Hard Rock has already signed a Letter of Intent with Gambling Innovation Group for an omni-channel sportsbook platform.
As previously mentioned, Freehold Raceway, owned by Penn National Gaming and Greenwood Gambling (owner of Parx Casino at Pennsylvania) is also a prime candidate to go into the land-based sports gambling realm.
On the online front, there’s a lot more space to maneuver as each sports gambling license holder is eligible for three branded websites, or skins. Some, like Monmouth Park and Resorts AC, have surfaced two skins, but many others, including heavyweights Tropicana, Hard Rock Casino, and Golden Nugget, have not launched any. Expect multiple AC-branded online sportsbooks to pop up in the not-so-distant near future, and for different companies such as the Kindred Group (currently aligned with Hard Rock Casino) and Australian-based PointsBet (partnered with all the Meadowlands) to also launching online publications in New Jersey.
After the smoke clears it won’t be unheard of to see upwards of 30 online sportsbooks in New Jersey.
Regulations, taxes, and revenue It was just a few brief weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court kicked PASPA to the wayside which New Jersey passed sports gambling legislation. The bill passed by unanimous vote in both chambers and has been signed into law by Governor Phil Murphy (who happened to put the initial bet at Monmouth Park after that week) on June 11.
Regulation of the industry was handed off to the NJ Division of Gaming Enforcement, the exact same agency that manages oversight for Atlantic City casinos and internet gaming websites in New Jersey. Luckily, the nation had been primed to offer sports gambling for many years, enabling regulators to release emergency regulations just two weeks following Murphy penned the sport gambling bill into legislation.
New Jersey law mandates that only qualified casinos and racetracks be eligible for a sports betting license, which online sportsbook operators have to be partnered with a permit holder. Other points of interest:
The fee for a sports wagering license was put at a minimum of $100,000
The tax rate is set at 8.5percent for land-based places, and 13 percent for internet websites, with horsemen required to pay an extra 1.25% to the Department of Local Government Services in the Dept. of Community Affairs.
License holders are restricted to three independently branded sites, or skins.
Wagering on college sports is permitted, unless a New Jersey college or college team is involved. Then it’s a no-go.
License holders have a 270-day window (transactional waiver) to operate online sportsbooks in the absence of a physical sportsbook.
New Jersey doesn’t cover an ethics fee to professional sports leagues in exchange for league and data oversight, nor will it probably ever.
With regards to handle, New Jersey novels took $184 million in stakes throughout September 2018. And out of June — September, the industry generated over $40.4 million in earnings. Word is still out on just how big the industry will get, since there are still a great deal of books that have not established yet, and lots of would-be bettors are still not aware of the distinction between legal and offshore sites, or that legal sports betting is even something. Industry analysts see NJ sports betting topping out at just over $300 million in yearly revenue, which might render it an ever-so-slightly bigger moneymaker than in Nevada. We tend to agree with this investigation.
A brief history of New Jersey sports gambling New Jersey’s battle to legalize sports betting within its boundaries extends all of the way back to 2009, when State Sen. Raymond Lesniak introduced sports gambling legislation. His bill would readily pass through voter referendum in 2011, resulting then Governor Chris Christie to maneuver it into law the following year.
Regrettably there was one massive roadblock, and that was the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Amendment (PASPA) of 1992. PASPA, driven by former New York Knick Bill Bradley, illegal sports wagering in all but four states (and actually only Nevada). Lately, New Jersey had a 1 year window in the inception of PASPA to pass legislation legalizing sports gambling in the country, but political chaos doomed the effort. Because of this, New Jersey was effectively shut from sports betting for the next 25 decades.
Soon after sports gambling regulations were posted in August 2012, professional sports leagues filed a lawsuit against Christie and New Jersey. The upcoming few years were riddled with disappointment for New Jersey, since it lost in the district courts, then double at the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. Subsequently in June 2014, the nation was delivered another devastating blow, when the U.S. Supreme Court refused to take New Jersey’s appeal.
Additionally in 2014, the always staunch gambling proponent Lesniak went to work on new sports betting legislation that would function as a sort of PASPA workaround. Same effect, with New Jersey and Christie once more dropping to the leagues in the courts. But by this time, the prevailing attitude toward sports betting was beginning to show some cracks. Guided by this, New Jersey once again asked the U.S. Supreme Court to hear its case. This time, it approved, hearing oral arguments in Christie v. NCAA (afterwards Murphy v. NCAA) on December 4, 2017.
Five-and-a-half month after, on May 14, 2018, the Court announced its decision, voting 7-2 which PASPA violated the 10th amendment, and deeming it entirely unconstitutional by a 6-3 count. Only a few weeks later, New Jersey passed a new sports gambling bill, also in a ribbon cutting ceremony in the Monmouth Park sportsbook on June 14, 2018, the business has been born.Today, it thrives.
