‘We’re not stuck in our ways,’ says PGA Tour commissioner on slow play

(CNN) — Winning a golf tournament hasn’t been more rewarding.
The Experts’ winning purse increased to $11 million in 2017. Both the Players Championship and the US Open’s winning handbag rocketed to $12.5 million last year. The winner of the FedEx Cup gets an eye-watering $15 million.
Yet lately the sport has gotten something of a crisis of confidence in the play of several top players.
Notably, his fellow professionals criticized American Bryson DeChambeau in the Northern Trust event in New Jersey.
Afterwards, the European Tour announced protocols which could see players punished with punishment strokes to get slow play in the future.
“From the stand pointthere were 1.2 million shots which were hit this season,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan told CNN Sport’s Patrick Snell, talking about potential modifications to the game.
“And you’ve got some instances where gamers are taking too much time. Like every thing else in our business, this is something we’re constantly monitoring.”

He continued:”We aren’t stuck in our own ways. We know that gamers are currently watching the top players on the planet on the PGA Tour and the LPGA Tour, plus they mimic their actions.
“And therefore, if there’s a chance for us to make a positive contribution to the game and continue to elevate our product, that’s what we’re going to perform.”
A changing world
With the impact of networking and the world moving at a quicker location, attention spans are also arguably getting shorter.
Fans need more action packed into their viewing experience and intervals between play.
“If you have a take a look at pace of play and you also look at the way the world is shifting and also the need that everything occur faster than it did in the past, it’s something we have been considering,” Monahan added.
“We’ve been considering it since February 2019. We’re talking about our players council and our players and we are likely to use this as an opportunity. It’s not about any individual player.
“It’s about our organization putting a system in place that enables us to improve and ultimately can help excite those people that will watch and mimic the fantastic players on earth, their pre-shot routines, the way they approach the match.
“However, not everything is going to be perfect and you have got to recognize the regions it is possible to improve and that’s what we’re doing”

‘Inspiring and amazing’
Regardless of the dilemma of play, there have been some narrative lines during this season that have experienced audiences gripped.
From Tiger Woods’ remarkable comeback to win the Masters, to Brooks Koepka switching into the newest superstar of the sport , and Shane Lowry’s fairy tale Spacious triumph in Royal Portrush, it has made for viewing.
And Monahan states golf as a sport is in a location that is good.
“How we look at this new program is we are at a period of championships, beginning in March with all the Players all the way via the Open Championship at July which then leads us into the FedEx Cup Playoffs,” Monahan said.
“So, if you look at the champions we have had from this calendar year, from Rory McIlroy to Tiger Woods into Brooks Koepka to Gary Woodland into Shane Lowry, and you also consider the quality of those championships, the championships themselves were more inspiring and outstanding.

“And they have all developed. Those championships are still thrive. And what you’re seeing as we get in the year of championships and also the FedEx Cup Playoffs is eyeballs and energy on the game as we continue to attempt to play our roster to boost our game up and go forwards.
“What a year. Consider each of those events I just said and those winners and exactly what they didn’t get there and the excitement. You’ve got to be feeling really good about where we are going.”
